Alan J. Zook

Alan J. Zook, 50, of 13 S. Willowgreen Court, died Sunday, June 22, 2008 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.  A Funeral mass will be held 10:30 AM Friday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams with Rev. Jon Seda, Monsignor Joseph Slepicka and Deacon Chuck Cooper celebrating the mass.  Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 PM Thursday at Holy Family Catholic Church.  A scriptural wake service will be held at 8:00 PM.  In lieu of flowers and in memory of Als community service, the family requests memorials be directed to Holy Family Catholic Church, Boy Scouts, Hospice of North Iowa or the Salvation Army.
 
Al was born April 25, 1958 in Mason City the son of Jack and Marilyn (Moravec) Zook.  He graduated from Mason City High School in 1976 then graduated from North Iowa Area Community College and Buena Vista University.  Al lived and worked in Southern California for 3 years before returning to Mason City in 1983.  He became a partner in Yelland & Hanes working there until 1990.  Al then worked in the financial services industry as a financial planner and continued working up until his death.  He married Danette Kemna November 11, 1989 at Holy Family Catholic Church.  Al enjoyed working with his brother Ray as a member of the Monroe Storage Ground Crew. He was a devoted husband and father, and in particular enjoyed the numerous Zook family vacations. Al was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church where he served as former Parish Council Chair and helped spearhead the Holy Family HeritageFest.  Among his other community activities were the 23 years as the Tuba Christmas Coordinator, which started with 6 players, now over 100, and the largest and oldest in Iowa; Band Fesitval committee for 10 years, 4 of which he served as Chairperson; United Way, where he served as a former board and campaign chair and received the Bob Dutcher award; Salvation Army Advisory Board Member; Boy Scouts, Eagle Scout, Lakeland District Chair, 2001-2007, Winnebago Council Board, 2001-present, Coveted Buffalo Patrol, Wood Badge, C-15-04, Tiger Club Leader, Newman School Pack 401, 2006-2007 and Wolf Cub Leader, Newman School Pack 401, 2007-2008; Mason City Chamber of Commerce past board member and Ambassador of the Year in 1990, 1991, 1993 and 1996; Mason City CVB, a former board chair and member; Newman Catholic Schools, where he served as a Newman Daycare Building Committee Member and helped in the construction of Newman Playground; Prairie Playground brick walkway sales and installation; Mason City Parks and Recreation Department where he was an assistant softball coach for 2 years and on the East Park Performing Arts Pavilion Committee; Mason City Councilman, Ward Two, for 2 years; Mason City Community Schools Instrumental Music Boosters Chair and board member as well as a Foundation Member; Elks Lodge and a  Knights of Columbus 4th Degree Knight.  Al recently received from the Mason City Noon Rotary Club the Service Above Self Award and from KTTC Television in Rochester the Ten Who Make A Difference Award.   
 
Al is survived by his wife, Danette A. Zook of Mason City; children, Angela and John Zook of Mason City; Parents, Jack and Marilyn Zook of Mason City; 2 brothers, Bill (Tammy) Zook of Ankeny, Ray (Anne) Zook of Mason City; sister, Jo Ann (Rob) Pearce of Mason City; mother-in-law, Jean Kemna of Mason City; sister-in-law, Diane (Bhasker) Dave of Independence; brother-in-law, Daryl  (Jan) Kemna of Merrimac, Wisconsin; brother-in-law, Don (Shellie) Kemna of Kansas City, Missouri; sister-in-law, Doreen (Timothy) Beddow of West Lake, Ohio; brother-in-law, Duane (Kim) Kemna of Mason City; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
 
Al was preceded in death by his grandparents and father-in-law, Clemens Bud Kemna.
