Annette was born at home in Nora Springs, IA in 1948, the youngest of Clayton and Tilla (Ericksen) Quam's ten children. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1966 and earned a cosmetology degree at Mason City School of Cosmetology in 1968. Because Annette was the baby of the Quam family, many of her older brothers and sisters were already busy raising their own children. Her sister Betty (Quam) Squier recalls many mistook Annette for one of her children. Pat (Bailey) Martin was Annette’s niece, but they graduated in the same high school class and have always shared a close relationship. Many relatives fondly remember Annette, covered in flour, hosting the family’s gatherings to make lefse for the holidays. She married Thomas Peterson of Clear Lake in November 1969 and moved to Kansas during his service with the U.S. Army at Fort Riley. The couple returned to Iowa with their first daughter, Angela, and welcomed a second daughter, Deborah eventually moving to acreage outside of Rockford. After a divorce, Annette returned to Mason City where she married dashing grocery manager Dan Duray in February 2004. The couple traveled and lived together in joy and laughter. They were active in the community, loved to entertain and were well known for a dazzling Christmas light display in Eastbrook. Sadly, Annette lost Dan to cancer in December 2010. For over 30 years, Annette worked at the Hollywood Beauty Shop in Mason City and became part owner. She loved the Hollywood and enjoyed chit chatting with her regular clientele. Her daughters often teased that the shop was the gossip center of North Iowa. Annette retired in August 2013. Annette’s house was always full of friends and family. She hosted bonfires, garage parties and gatherings bringing people together. She was truly loved by her family and friends. After all, she was the life of the party! Annette listened to people, cared deeply for many and helped family and friends in need. She is survived by her daughters and their families, Angela (Peterson) Heins, Ric Heins, Christopher and Susan of Roseville, MN; Deborah (Peterson) Nash, Thomas Nash, Jr., Dylan (Fiancé Taylor Mills) and Alyssa of Osage, IA; stepdaughter April (Duray) Welch, Nate Welch, Finley and Scarlet of Grimes; siblings, Bob Quam of Plymouth, Donna Cooper of Iowa Falls, Betty Squier, Carolyn King, Lyle and Clayton Quam of Mason City. Through her marriage to Dan, Annette joined the Duray family and is survived by Debbie (Dennis) Bauer, Barb (John) Keene, Jean (Rick) Isle, Alan (Karen) Duray, Tom Duray, Penny (Eric) Ellingson, Sandy (Craig) Anderson, Katy (Jim) Latimer, Kathy (Andy) Johnson, Shelly (David) Battenberg, many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Annette is survived by numerous family members and dear friends who will miss her greatly. She is preceded in death by her husband, Dan; father and mother, Clayton and Tilla; brothers, John and Ivan Quam; sister, LeVound (Quam) Bailey and other cherished loved ones. “Until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand.” - Irish Prayer
