Audrey M. Gabel, 64, of Mason City, died Sunday, November 24, 2013 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit after a battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, 2502 S. Jefferson, with Rev. James Magelssen officiating. Interment will be at 2:30 PM in Greenwood Cemetery, Bancroft, Iowa. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Tuesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue and continue at the church one hour before services on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa or the Humane Society of North Iowa. Audrey Mae Gabel, daughter of Arthur and Betty (Dixon) Bergum was born June 2, 1949 in Estherville, Iowa. She was baptized at Belmont Lutheran Church in rural Jackson, Minnesota. She attended country school in rural Jackson until the 4th grade. Her family then moved to a farm near Bancroft, Iowa. She was later confirmed at Blakjer Lutheran Church near Seneca, Iowa. Audrey attended Seneca Elementary school and graduated from Sentral Fenton High School in 1967. She attended business school at Mankato Community College and then went to work for Surgical Associates in Mason City until early 1976. She was united in marriage to Alvin Gabel from March 20, 1971 until 1998. They welcomed three children into their family, David, Sarah, and Zachary. She worked for Surgical Associates for 8 years, 3 years at Rieman Music, 9 years at KCMR Radio, and 16 years at the MacNider Art Museum. Audrey volunteered her time with many church committees, TLC and OSLF. She was a leader for 4-H, Girl Scouts, and Cub Scouts. She cherished spending time with her family and friends and also enjoyed reading, crafts, and baking. Audrey is survived by her children, David (Michele) Gabel of Indianola, Sarah (Jeff) Borengasser of Little Rock, Arkansas, and Zachary Gabel of Charles City; 3 grandchildren, Gabriel Robinson of Indianola, Xavier and Bowen Borengasser of Little Rock; sisters, Catherine (James) Henry of Annandale, Virginia, Carrie Bergum and her partner Robert Janzen of Minneapolis, Minnesota; brother, Thomas Bergum of Bancroft; many aunts, uncles, cousins, and a multitude of friends.
