Mason City Avis M. Pavek, age 104, of Mason City, died Monday (Sept. 13, 2010) at her home. Memorial services will be at 2:00 P.M., Thursday, September 16, 2010, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 100 1st St. N.E., with Rev. Patti Aurand officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 PM 6:00 PM on Wednesday, September 15, 2010 at the church. Private Interment will be at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the First Congregational United Church of Christ or a charity of your choice.\r\n
Avis Marie was born August 1, 1906 in Brooten, MN, the daughter of John and Mary Alice (Kennedy) Bloom. She was the second of eight children. She completed the eight grade in the country school at Royalton, MN. As a young woman she moved to Mason City, IA and worked at the Ideal American Laundry. On September 14, 1931, she married Anthony J. Pavek in Little Falls, MN. Two daughters were born to this union, Mary Jo and Joyce Marie. \r\n
Avis unselfishly dedicated her life to her role as wife and mother. She enjoyed gardening, dancing, nature (bird-watching), and loved caring for little children. She was very witty, had a great imagination and was very adept in pointing out many images in cloud formations, frost designs, tree branches etc She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ and the V.H. Club.\r\n
She is survived by her daughters, Mary Jo and Joyce, both of Mason City; special friends Mark K. and Tom Ferleman of Albert Lea, MN. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.\r\n
Avis was preceded in death by her husband Anthony in 1995, her parents, three brothers: Clarence Bloom, Wesley Bloom, and Kenneth Bloom; four sisters: Mabel Ditzler, Ruth Bloom, Ruby Wood, and Esther OSullivan.
