MASON CITY: Bertha L. Flatness, 91, of Rockwell, formerly of Mason City, died Wednesday, October 23, 2013 at the Rockwell Care Center. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Monday, October 28, 2013 at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue with Pastor Kathy Graves, Trinity Lutheran Church officiating. Interment will be in South Shell Rock Cemetery, rural Northwood. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Monday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Board of Youth Ministry at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Avenue, Mason City, Iowa 50401. Bertha was born February 9, 1922 in Osage, Iowa the daughter of Lloyd and Matilda (Diedrich) Lonergan. She attended school in Osage. Bertha moved to Mason City in 1938. She married Elmer S. Flatness January 4, 1945 in Mason City. She was a life-long resident of Mason City. Bertha was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Some of her interests included sewing, embroidering, quilting, gardening, and playing cards. She especially enjoyed being around her grandchildren. Bertha is survived by 2 sons, Dennis D. (Jean) Flatness of St. Louis, Missouri, and Michael G. (Cheryl) Flatness of Rockwell; grandchildren, Chris (Jenny) Flatness of Mason City, and Phillip (Megan) Flatness of Mason City; step grandchildren and great grandchildren, John (Jolene) Romney, Michael, Max, and Miles of Big Sky, Montana, Jennifer Romney of St. Louis, Missouri, Tom (Nicole) Storey, Trevor, Ryan, and Kayla of Olathe, Kansas, Chris (Chelsey) Morrison and Hailey of Panora, Iowa; sister, Dora Weiland of Mason City; brother, Mahlon Lonergan of Adams, Minnesota; several nieces and nephews.
