Bess (Bessie) Alvina Schmidt, 89, of Mason City, IA, passed away on Friday, August 16, 2013, after a brief stay at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit. Memorial services will be held at 1:30 P.M. on Saturday, September 7, 2013, at the Good Shepherd Health Center (Chapel), 302 2nd Street N.E., with Rev. Kent Mechler officiating. Memorials may be directed to the Bess Schmidt memorial fund in care of the family. Bess was born August 12, 1924, daughter of Fred and Emma (Jausch) Schmidt in Cumberland, WI. She was baptized as an infant and the family settled in LuVerne, IA where she attended LuVerne public schools, graduating with the class of 1942. She later moved to St. Paul, MN and worked at various secretarial jobs. In 1947, she wed Roger Bahls and their marriage was blessed with three children: Dennis, Ronald and Nancy. Later in life she moved back to Mason City, and following a hip fracture in 2002, she made her home at Good Shepherd Care Center. Bess enjoyed country music, gardening, playing piano for church, embroidery, crocheting, crossword puzzles and most of all her family. Bess is survived by her two sons: Dennis Bahls (Linda) of Hayward, WI, Ronald (Cathy) Norwood Young America, MN, and daughter Nancy LeBlanc (Mark) of Delray Beach FL. One brother: John W. Schmidt of Mason City, nieces: Debora Schmidt of Savage, MN, Chris Slattery of Mason City, nephew: Steve Schmidt of Aurora, CO; two grandchildren: Meghan Bahls and Evan Bahls; and one great grandson: Dylan Bahls. She was preceded in death by her parents.
