Betty R. Slock, 101, of Mason City, passed away on Sunday, December 24, 2023, at the Good Shepherd Health Center. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, December 29, 2023, at St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 4th St SE. Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, December 28, 2023, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N Pennsylvania Ave. Inurnment will be held in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to St. James Lutheran Church.
Betty Rae Slock was born on November 24, 1922, in Elkader, IA to parents Walter and Pearl (Riordan) Kerlin. In 1924, Betty and her family moved to Marquette, IA then moving to McGregor, IA in 1939. Betty graduated from McGregor High School in 1940. After high school she attended the American Institute of Commerce in Davenport for one year. In 1941 Betty moved to Mason City. She started working for Iowa Hardware Mutual Insurance Company, doing so for nine years. In September of 1948, Betty was united in marriage to Leslie Slock. Together the couple had two children, Leslie and Sally. Betty then became a stay-at-home mom and did so for 15 years; until her return to the workforce within the school system serving as secretary for NIACC, Grant School and the High School until her retirement in 1987.
Betty loved to read, travel, solve crosswords and jigsaw puzzles. She belonged to Beta Sigma Phi for 57 years. She was very outgoing and loved being around people.
Betty is survived by her children, Sally (Jim) Leider, Leslie (Bernard) Smith; grandchildren, Sam Leider, Mark (Dani Zeigler) Leider, Morgan (Jamison Diekhuis) Leider, Amanda (Wyatt) Miller, Anna (Ben) Russell; great grandchildren, Owen Miller, Evan Miller; one niece and three nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie Slock; parents; sister, Naomi (Larry) LaRue; brother-in-law, Lloyd Slock; sisters-in-law, Myrtle and Evelyn Slock.
