Beverly J. Hermanson

Beverly J. Hermanson, 97, of Mason City, IA, died August 20, at the Good Shepherd Health Center. Upon her wishes, her body has been donated to the University of Iowa College of Medicine in Iowa City. Memorial services will be held November 9, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia, Mason City with Pastor Sean McRoberts officiating. Inurnment will be held at a later date in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church or Hospice of North Iowa, 232 2nd Street S.E., Mason City IA 50401. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.majorericksonfuneralhome.com Beverly was born September 14, 1915, in Lisbon, ND, the daughter of Valdemar and Georgia Hark (Howell) Jensen. In 1919 her family moved to Fergus Falls, MN, where she attended school and was graduated from Fergus Falls High School. She attended North Dakota State University and earned a B.S. degree from Iowa State University. She taught home economics and general science in Buffalo Center, IA, and Fergus Falls. Beverly was united in marriage to Everett J. Hermanson on June 26, 1939, in Fergus Falls. Over the years they lived in Algona, IA (1940-1943), Fergus Falls (1943 – 1946), and Lincoln, NE (1946-1948), before moving to Mason City in July 1948. She was a substitute teacher for the Mason City Schools for many years, retiring in 1989. Beverly was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and Sarah Circle. She was also a member of PEO (Chapter GN), Maria Mitchell Study Group, Home Economics Club, and Gamma Phi Beta sorority. She had been a hospice volunteer, a scout leader, and a docent at the Frank Lloyd Wright Stockman House. She also had served on the boards of the Mason City Foundation, the local chapter of the American Cancer Society, the High School Instrumental Music Parents Group and Lincoln School PTA, including terms as president. Entertaining friends and family, hosting foreign exchange students, traveling worldwide, and volunteering at church and in the community were her passions. Gathering with the family at the lake was a particular joy. Beverly is survived by two sons: Dr. Paul Hermanson and wife Fran of Marshalltown, IA, and Dr. Mark Hermanson and wife Tammy of Bettendorf, IA; three grandchildren: Dr. John Hermanson and wife Patty, Mary Greff and husband Andrew, and Katie Hardie and husband Dennis; six great grandchildren: Noah and Phoebe Hermanson; Elizabeth, Katherine and Nicholas Greff, and Austin Hardie; and two sisters: Norma Marvin of Yakima, WA, and Georgiana Nesting of Gig Harbor, WA. She was preceded in death by her husband in 2009, her parents; her daughter, Ann Collins, and husband Dave; and two grandchildren, Scott and Jeffrey Collins and great-granddaughter, Peyton Hardie. The family expresses deep appreciation to Dr. Linda Floden, Dr. Dana DeLach and the North Iowa Hospice team for their superb medical care and to the Good Shepherd staff for the care, dignity and love extended to Beverly over the past 13 years.

Inurnment will be held at a later date in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.
