Bonnie J. King, 79, of Mason City, died Monday, March 2, 2015 at home. Memorial services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, March 6, 2015 at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue with Pastor Kathy Graves, Trinity Lutheran Church officiating. Inurnment will take place in Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Bonnie J. King Memorial Fund. Bonnie was born December 21, 1935 in Mason City the daughter of Hans L. and Nettie B. (Hanson) Hjelle. She attended schools in Mason City. Bonnie married Frank Smed and the couple had three children – Kai, Rod and Nina. They later divorced. Bonnie married Keith E. King November 25, 1975 in Clear Lake. Bonnie was well known for her love of animals. She enjoyed her work at a small animal clinic, and was happiest with a small dog at her side. Bonnie took pride in her yard and spent countless hours outside, working on yard decoration upkeep and projects. She delighted in painting saw blades with landscapes or animal themes. During warm months, Bonnie could often be found entertaining family and friends on the patio. No matter what the season, the coffee pot was ‘always on’ and Bonnie happily welcomed family and friends into her home. She was long-time member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Bonnie is survived by her children, Kai Smed of Vancouver, Washington, Rodney (Barb) Smed of Waukon and Nina (Doug) Stilwell of Vancouver, Washington; step-children, David (Pam) King of Mason City, Jimmy (Kathy) King of Mason City, Mitchell (Darlene) King of Mason City, Dion (Sandy) King of Mason, Nancy King of Mason City and Sena (John) Amos of Des Moines; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; brothers, Helmer Hjelle of Mason City, Newell (Donna) Trustin of Mason City; sister-in-law, Joanne Hjelle of Mason City; many nieces and nephews. Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Keith in 2011; brother, Oscar; 2 sisters, Beverly (George Sr.) Smidt and Lillian (Harold) Marsh; sister-in-law, Nita Hjelle.
