MELBOURNE, FLORIDA ? Catherine C. McCauley, 95 of Melbourne, Fla. and formerly of Mason City died Tuesday, October 11, 2005 at The Palms Rehabilitation Center in Melbourne, Fla. A memorial mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 22, 2005 at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 North Adams Avenue with Rev. Jon Seda officiating. A gathering of family and friends will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, October 21, 2005 at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 North Pennsylvania Avenue. Inurnment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be directed to the Catherine C. McCauley Memorial Scholarship Fund c/o the Education Foundation of the Mason City Public School System, 1515 South Pennsylvania Avenue, Mason City, Iowa 50401. Catherine C. Galagan, the daughter of Bernard S. and Christena M. (Scholl) Galagan, was born February 26, 1910 in Buffalo Center, Iowa. Catherine attended school in Rockwell and graduated from Rockwell High School in 1927. She then attended the Iowa State Teacher?s College in Cedar Falls, graduating in 1944. Catherine also attended Drake University and the University of Iowa for additional training. She began teaching in rural Cerro Gordo County in 1928 and then taught in Kellogg, Hampton, Marshalltown and Rockwell before moving to Mason City in 1948. Catherine was united in marriage to Joseph C. McCauley on June 8, 1948 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rockwell. She taught in Mason City for many years, retiring from Mason City Public Schools in 1975, but she continued to teach part time and help special needs students until 1998. Catherine was a long-time member of Holy Family Catholic Church. She was also a member of many fraternal and educational organizations and clubs including Iowa State Education Association, National Education Association, Past President of the Mason City Education Association, Kappa Delta Pi, Pi Gammu Mu, Past President of the Iowa Council on Social Studies, Past President of Iowa Council of Geographic Education, St. Teresa Circle of the Holy Family Guild and a facilitator for Renew 2000. Over her many years of teaching and being actively involved in her community, Catherine received many community service honors including Rotary Club?s Service Above Self Award, Mercy Hospital?s Silver Distinction Award for Excellence in Education, Mason City Education Association?s Friend of Education Award, KIMT?s Golden Apple Award, Council on Geographic Education?s Distinction In Teaching Award, and Outstanding Teaching Recognition from both Kellogg and Hampton School Systems. Catherine touched many lives by giving of her self while teaching and will be missed by her family and many former students. Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Bernard McCauley and wife Cathy of West Point, Iowa; daughter, Sheila McCauley and husband David Johnson of Indialantic, Fla.; grandson, Courtney McCauley of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; granddaughter, Elizabeth McCauley of West Point, Iowa; granddaughter, Christena Callahan and husband Chris of Sebastian, Fla.; sister, Mary Ellen Murphy of Nora Springs; niece, Maureen Georgou and husband Robert Guenther of Bloomington, Minn.; niece, Marilyn Murphy and husband David Aguilar of San Antonio, Texas; and nephew, Larry McCauley and wife Peggy of Liberty Lake, Wash. Catherine was preceded in death by her parents, Bernard and Christena Galagan, and her husband Joseph in 1995.
