MASON CITY: Colby A. Schmidtke, 16, of Mason City died Thursday, October 28, 2010 at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Monday, November 1, 2010 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Avenue with Pastor Kathy Graves officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 7:00 PM Sunday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue and continue at the church one hour prior to the service on Monday. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the Colby A. Schmidtke Memorial Fund in care of the family.
Colby Allen Schmidtke was born June 22, 1994 in Mason City, the son of Dale and Brenda (Berding) Schmidtke. He attended school in Mason City and was currently a junior at the Mason City High School. When Colby was younger he enjoyed participating in sports and played baseball until the ninth grade.
Colby enjoyed tinkering and fixing motors and spending time in his dads shop. He had a love of cars, especially Ford Mustangs; he periodically enjoyed attending car shows. Colby loved to fish and always enjoyed going on the annual fishing trip to Devils Lake in North Dakota with his Grandpa, uncles and many friends, he would commonly out-fish the group. He also loved snowmobiling and was always excited to ride with his friends and was looking forward to the first snowfall. Colby was easy going and loved joking around and laughing, he had a great work ethic and worked part-time at Hy-Vee East. Colby loved spending time with his friends and family and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. He is survived by his parents at home, Dale and Brenda Schmidtke; sister, Samantha; grandparents, Ben Berding and Muriel of Mason City, Marge Berding (Mardene) and Johnny of Mason City, Joyce Schmidtke of St. Ansgar; aunts and uncles, John and Julie Berding, their children, Sara and Jace, Tom Schmidtke (Jan), their children, Summer and Faith, Danny Tamara Schmidtke, their children, D.J., Josh and Trevor, Mike and Susie Hobkirk, their children, Adria, Rachael, and Josh; best friend, Dustin McMurray and many other good friends; and many other relatives. He was preceded in death by his great-grandparents, John and Alberta Berding, Ruby and Bob Smith, John and Laura Mullenbruch.
