Connie J. Wendel

Connie Wendel, 66, of Mason City, passed away early Saturday morning, February 17, 2024, at the Heritage Care Center after her “Brave Spirit” battled with cancer in which she fought courageously on her terms. Per Connie’s wishes, there will be no funeral services. A graveside service will be held at a later date at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.  

Connie was born and raised in Mason City, Iowa. She resided in Hawaii one year, and then returned to Mason City.  

Connie graduated from Mason City High School in 1976 and was in the 50 mile Swim and Drill team. She was so proud of that and enjoyed being in parades in throughout High School. After graduating high school, Connie worked at Bergos, Roberts, General Nutrition Center and spent two summers as a crew leader detasseling corn until the onset of mental illness at 25 years old. This was a real “game changer” which Connie bravely fought despite the mental stigma that oftentimes accompanies this hard to understand, disease.  

Connie was preceded in death by her parents, Calvin and Shirley (Humburg) Wendel; various grandparents, Howard Wendel and Vera, Arthur and Catherine Humburg; aunts and uncles, and numerous cousins.  

Connie is survived by her sister, Sonia Wendel and Jeff Siebels of Anamosa, Iowa; cousins, aunts, and uncles, and a few true friends that stood by her side throughout her life. 

Connie loved all of God’s creatures big and small. Many could sense her gentle heart and the kind person that she was, and they responded in a positive way to her. Connie often prayed out loud giving the lord thanks for them, to please keep them free of harm, and make sure they have food, shelter, and all pets could have a good and loving home. 

 Connie was a confirmed member of First United Methodist Church. She frequently attended Praise Community Church at times, it was across the street from where she lived, and she could walk. Thank you to the minister at First United Methodist Church who visited Connie several times at the care center and her prayers, which meant so much!
