Dale D. Byre, 62 of Mason City, died Thursday, December 18, 2003 at Mercy Medical Center ? North Iowa. Funeral services for Dale will be held 1:30 P.M., Tuesday, December 23, 2003 at Zion Lutheran Church in Chamberlain, South Dakota with the Rev. Daryl Tompkins officiating. Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery, Chamberlain, South Dakota. Memorials may be directed towards the family. Visitation will be held 5:00 PM ? 7:00 PM on Sunday, December 21, 2003 at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 North Pennsylvania Avenue, Mason City, Iowa and from 12:00 noon until service time, at church on Tuesday in South Dakota. Dale was born on March 2, 1941 in Iron Nation, South Dakota to John and Emily Byre. He was confirmed in the Zion Lutheran Church in Chamberlain, South Dakota. He attended Reliance High School and was an enthusiastic basketball and track participant. After graduating from Reliance High School in 1960 he attended Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, South Dakota and the Western College of Auctioneering in Billings, Montana. He is a Charter Member of the South Dakota Auctioneer?s Association which started in 1962. He then operated Byre Auction in Kennebec while ranching. He enjoyed riding in the bull riding and saddle bronc rodeos. He was then united in marriage to Gail Bingen in 1962 and worked as General Production Manager and announcer of KPLO-TV in Reliance for three years before acquiring his Federal Communications Commission 1st Class Engineer license at the Radio Electronic Institute in Sarasota, Florida. He returned to KPLO-TV as an electronics engineer until 1969 when he returned to ranching and auctioneering. Dale and Gail ranched until 1972 they then started several businesses in the area while living in Gregory, Vermillion and Yankton, South Dakota. In 1982 he returned to college at the National School of Business in Rapid City, South Dakota. From there he accepted a position as transmitter engineer at KDUH-TV in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. Then in 1985 he moved his family to Mason City, Iowa and accepted a position as Chief Engineer of KIMT-TV. He still enjoyed auctioneering at times. Dale was an accomplished ?storyteller/writer? and had several published articles. He also sculpted wildlife figurines, woodworking and enjoyed restoring his favorite collector cars. Dale was also an avid gun collector and hunter. His most recent venture was ?Collector Cars in the Heartland? video productions, which have aired on several markets. His pride and joy were his four sons and the birth of his grandson Dillon, age 3. He is survived by: Wife: Gail Byre of Mason City Son: Dale Byre Jr. and wife Ra?Londa of Lincoln, Nebraska Son:Brett Byre and wife Julie of Greenbay, Wisconsin Son:Bryan Byre and wife Stacy of Des Moines, Iowa Son:Jesse Byre and Kelly Janssen of Mason City Grandson: Dillon Byre of Lincoln, Nebraska Brothers:Ed Byre of Reliance, South Dakota Elton Byre and wife Jody of Sioux Falls, South Dakota Sisters:JoAnn Porterfield and husband Art of Trapper Creek, Alaska Jean Anderson and husband Lee of Reliance, South Dakota And Many Nieces and Nephews Dale was preceded in death by his parents, John and Emily Byre, and infant daughter, Laurel Ann, and a nephew, Wade Byre.
