Dallas L. Johnson, 83 of Mason City, died Thursday, March 13, 2008 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit. Funeral Services will be held Monday, March 17, 2008 at 11:00 AM at First United Methodist Church, 119 South Georgia, with Rev. Jim Stiles officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery with Military Honors performed by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services at the church on Monday. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa.
Dallas was born on July 17, 1924 in Latimer, Iowa the son of John and Altina (Sporaa) Johnson. He attended school in Alexander and graduated from there in 1942. He enlisted in the Army in 1945 and was honorably discharged in 1946. He was married in 1945 to Merle Shaffer in Mason City. They lived in Mason City for their entire lives. He worked as a delivery driver for Mayflower furniture for fifteen years, before going to work for Mason City Building Supply driving the delivery truck until his retirement in 1989. Dallas enjoyed working with wood and tinkering with anything that needed fixed. He enjoyed traveling to visit his family and he cherished the time he spent with them. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing and hunting. Dallas loved dancing with his wife, he also liked the time he spent chatting with friends. He was a member of the V.F.W. in Mason City and the Moose Lodge. He was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church and also a former member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Mason City.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Merle of Mason City; children, Judy Appleby and husband Charlie of Shawnee, KS, Mike Johnson and wife Gussella of Clear Lake, Kathy Meidlinger and husband Joe of Coralville, IA; grandchildren, Shannon, Shawn, Summer, Stacey, Sarah, Hesper, Merlita; great-grandchildren, Tanner, Trevor, Gabriel, Molly, Nathaniel, Sydney, Dyllan, Lylian, Jordan, Tyler, Mia, and Zander.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Altina Johnson; brothers, C.K. Johnson, John Johnson Jr., Lavern Johnson, Melvin Johnson, twin brother, Duaine Johnson; sisters, Altina Schmeling and Jenny Long.
