David R. Kalvig

September 21, 1929 — January 27, 2008

David R. Kalvig, 78, of 1051 17th Street NE, died Sunday, January 27, 2008 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.  Memorial services will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday at the Rolling Acres Free Methodist Church, 604 23rd Street SW with Pastor Larry Day officiating.  There will be no visitation.  The body has been donated to Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota.  Inurnment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date.  Memorials may be given to the David R. Kalvig Memorial Fund.  David was born September 21, 1929 in Ackley, Iowa the son of Vern and Anna Marie (Thiel) Kalvig.  David married Betty Jane Lynch June 12, 1948 in Mason City.  He worked for Northwestern States Portland Cement Company for 30 years.  He retired in 1979 as a maintenance lead man.  Following retirement, David had a flea market and scrap iron business that he considered more of a hobby than going to work.  Some additional hobbies included hunting, fishing, ice fishing, and spending summers at the cabin in Red Wing, Minnesota.  He gave of himself helping friends and neighbors and volunteering his time in helping keep East Park clean.  His final gift was his decision to donate his body to science so that others could learn and be helped.   David is survived by his wife, Betty Jane Kalvig of Mason City, son, Joseph Kalvig (Vicki) of Nora Springs, grandchildren, Amy Johnson (Russ) of Osage, Erin Neeley (Brian) of St. Ansgar, Jody Hackbart (Jason) of Grafton, David Kalvig of Garner, John Corley (Darcy) of Polson, Montana, Camie Corley of Northwood and Stephanie Condit of Creedmoor, North Carolina, 11 great grandchildren, brothers, Donald Kalvig (Shirley) of Northwood, Arthur Kalvig (Cathy) of Northwood and Carl Kalvig (Carolyn) of Northwood, sisters, Verna Weitzel (Gene) of Northwood and Dorothy Schoolcraft (Jim) of Hudson, Iowa, brother-in-law, Gaylen Quam (Vivian) of Northwood, many nieces and nephews, special friends, Bud and Alice Heinold of Mason  City. David is preceded in death by his parents, mother and father-in-law, Claude and Viola Lynch, brothers, Merle, Elmer and Raymond, sister, Rachel.
