Donald T. Newman, 78, of 340 S. Yorktown Pike, died early Sunday (April 3, 2005) morning at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit. A Funeral Mass will be Wednesday(April 13, 2005) at 10:30 A.M. at St. Joseph?s Catholic Church, 302 5th St. S.E. Inurnment will be in Clear Lake Cemetery, with full military honors conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association . Visitation will be Tuesday, (April 12, 2005), from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. Memorials may be directed to the Donald T. Newman memorial fund. Donald Thomas Newman was born on January 29, 1927 to George and Theresa (Hayes) Newman, in Forest City, IA. He graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1944 and immediately enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served in World War II in Wiesloaden, Germany. After his service, he attended St. Thomas University in St. Paul, MN, where he played football. After one year, he transferred to the University of Minnesota where he received a B.S. in Economics. He returned to Clear Lake to operate the family business of farm implement dealerships in Clear Lake and Mason City. On December 26, 1953 he married Doris Ruth Whipple in St. Patrick?s Catholic Church in Clear Lake. He worked in the farm implement and heavy equipment industry until his retirement. Donald played golf all his life and won the Clear Lake City Championship in 1955. He was a rabid Green Bay Packer fan. Donald was also a member of the V.F.W. Donald is survived by his wife, Doris Ruth Whipple and his children Michael Newman, Phoenix, AZ; Daniel Newman (Mary Ellen), Ft. Atkinson, WI; Jane Larsen(Ron), Mason City, IA; Nancy Newman(Andy), Milwaukee, WI; John Newman (Jackie), Cedar Rapids, IA; Amy Hughes (Chuck), Garner, IA; Margaret Newman (Marlys), Iowa City, IA; grandchildren Patrick and Michael Newman; William, Kate and Blake Nedved; Katharine, Mark, Michael and Meredith Larson; Andrew, John and Elizabeth Newman; T.J. Wilson and Jody Kintzel; Maggie and Dylan Hughes; Theo and Sophie Newman Van Meter; sisters Mary Ann Newman and Margaret Crawford. Donald was preceded in death by his father, George P. Newman and mother Theresa Hayes Newman, sisters, Kathleen Knipe Aylward and Ellen Tully and brothers James Newman and George Newman.
