Donald Harold Weber, 97, passed away at MercyOne in Mason City, Iowa, on March 13,2024. Visitation will be held Thursday, April 25, 2024 from 5 to 7 PM at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 North Pennsylvania Ave. Memorial services will be held at 10 AM Friday, April 26, 2024 at the church. Memorials may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church, KCMR or donors choice. Per Don's wishes, his body was donated to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN for medical research. Especially Diabetes and Parkinsons.
Don was born on December 18, 1926 in Lincoln, Nebraska to Roy S. and Ethel (Toren) Weber. He had one sister, Marian.
The family moved to Mason City in 1940 where his father established the R.S. Weber Carpet Company. Don attended Roosevelt Junior High and Mason City High School where he was active in vocal music and tennis.
The family joined Trinity Lutheran Church where Don was very active. He taught Sunday School and sang in the choir. Immediately following graduation from high school in 1945, he was drafted into the Army and left immediately to Ft. Worth, Texas for basic training. From training he was sent to Leghorn, Italy where he was in the Signal Corp. He was later honorably discharged. Don was honored to participate in a WWII Honor Flight to Washington D.C.
Upon his return to the states, he attended Mason City Junior College for 2 years. He also worked at the family store during these 2 years. He then transferred to Luther College in Decorah where he earned his degree in business. It was there he met Doris Spelhaug. They later married June 9th , 1951. They were blessed with over 72 years of marriage.
They established their home in Mason City where Don was associated with his family business. To that union, four children were born. Steven, Susan, David, and Daniel.
The family was very active in Trinity Lutheran Church. Don was the Sunday School Superintendent, taught Sunday School and sang in the choir. He also served on the Board of Deacons and The Board of Trustees. Don was a Boy Scout leader, a member of the Lions Club and the YMCA. He enjoyed fishing and went on many trips to northern Minnesota with his very close fishing buddies. He enjoyed golfing.
Don and Doris were able to enjoy many trips because their son Steven worked for Northwest Airlines and they received stand-by family benefits. They enjoyed many trips to many states and to Canada. Two highlights were a trip to Norway and a Caribbean Cruise.
Don is survived by his wife, Doris. Children Steve of Minneapolis, MN, Susan (Richard) Olsen of Garner, IA, David (Olga) Weber of Burnsville, MN and Daniel (Vickie) Weber of Virginia Beach, VA. Grandchildren Vanessa Weber, Kyle Weber and Jason Olsen. And several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Ethel, his mother-in-law and father-in-law Hans and Christina Spelhaug, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Marian and Bob Wass, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Dwaine and Helene Spelhaug, and nephew Dr Don Spelhaug.
