Dorothy “DD” C. Teas, 93, of Mason City, IA, died Thursday, May 22, 2014, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit. Per her wishes, her body has been donated to the University of Iowa in Iowa City, IA. Memorial services will be held at 2:30 PM on Friday, May 30, 2014, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue, with Chaplain Janet Dorenkamp, Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa officiating. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa: 232 2nd Street Southeast - Mason City, IA 50401. Dorothy was born August 2, 1920, in Clinton, OK, the daughter of George H. and L. Elizabeth (Bruce) Cantrell. She graduated from Central High in Tulsa, OK and continued her education at Lindenwood University and Northwestern University, earning her BA and MA degrees. DD was a self-employed consultant for many years. On October 24, 1973, she married Thomas C. Teas in Chicago, IL. She enjoyed spending time with her family and getting to know her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also enjoyed interior decorating and entertaining both in her home and on stage as an actress in local theater groups. She used her talent for entertaining others from 1980 to 2010 as the character of 'Quinella Quinby' on public radio station KCMR. Dorothy chose to use her radio name instead of her real name, she said, so as not to embarass her husband if she 'flubbed'. Dorothy and her husband were charter members of the Mason City Golf Club. They were world travelers until well into their 80's and spent many winters at their home in Spain. Dorothy was an avid bridge player until last month and was involved in several local organizations including the Mason City History Club and P.E.O. Sisterhood. Dorothy is survived by 1 son: Richard Balfanz and wife Peggy of Oshkosh, WI, 2 step-children: Gregory Teas, M.D., and wife Shaku of Chicago, IL, and Susan Smith and husband David of Waynesville, NC ; 5 grandchildren: Alex Balfanz, Kimberly Chelsvig, Ethan Teas, Sonia Teas and Zachary Smith; 6 great grandchildren: Parker Balfanz, Gabriel Balfanz, Benjamin Chelsvig, Dawson Chelsvig, Christian Chelsvig and Mason Smith; 1 sister: Mary Louise Trusdell of Richmond, VA; and 3 brothers: Richard Cantrell of Tulsa, OK, Robert Cantrell of Los Cruces, NM, and Bruce Cantrell and wife Joan of La Veta, CO. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 2011; and 2 step-daughters: Mary Elizabeth Teas and Martha Jane Teas.
