Dorothy was born May 10, 1912 in Omaha, Nebraska to John and Cora Long. After high school she met and married John Mikovec and they had son John, Jr. In around 1940, the family moved to Mason City for Decker Bros. (later Armour) where John was a Plant Engineer and Dorothy worked in payroll. Johnny and Dorothy enjoyed much world travel, grandchildren, and a cottage at Clear Lake; Dorothy was a league bowler, a very talented knitter, and a not very good but enthusiastic baker.
After her husband’s death in 1984, Dorothy became close friends with fellow senior and widower Alex Groff. Together they enjoyed trips over to the Lake in Alex’s Mustang with the top down, to Branson, to Niagara Falls and to Times Square in New York City. They had fun dancing, playing with Dorothy’s dog Bandit, and many, many birthdays and holidays in Ames with Dorothy’s great-grandchildren. Alex was Dorothy’s thoughtful, caring, and doting friend until his death in 2015.
Dorothy drove until she was 98, kept her own home until she was 102, and will be remembered by all who knew her as a fit and active, fiercely independent lady who enjoyed the sun, her dogs and cats, her roses, and time spent with the many good friends she made at the Mason City Senior Activity Center.
Dorothy is survived by daughter-in-law Kathryn; grandson John III (Amy), great grandchildren George and Clara; and granddaughter Julie Maupin, and Bandit.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and son: John Jr.
