Dr. J. Stephen Westly, 82, of 5 Woodbine Road, died Saturday (August 14, 2004) at the Good Shepherd Health Center. Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Avenue with Rev. James M. Magelssen and Rev. Samuel Hamilton-Poore officiating. Cremation will take place following the service. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church, Mercy Medical Center Foundation or Good Shepherd Health Center. Dr. Westly was born September 28, 1921 in Manly, Iowa the son of Gabriel S. and Beatrice (Cron) Westly. He graduated from Manly High School, the University of Iowa (Bachelor of Science) and the University of Iowa College of Medicine (M.D.) in 1944. He interned at Akron City Hospital, Akron, Ohio. Dr. Westly served as a lieutenant in the US Navy from 1946-48. Following his service from the Navy, he completed his residency in Internal Medicine from 1947 to 1950 in Des Moines. He married Dorothy Kottemann in August of 1947 in Burlington, Iowa. From 1951 to 1952 he assisted his father in his medical practice in Manly, Iowa. In October of 1952 he joined Dr. L.W. Swanson and Dr. Harry Marinos in the practice of Internal Medicine in Mason City. He was recalled to the Navy in 1953 during the Korean War returning to Mason City in 1954. He eventually became the senior partner of Internal Medicine Associates, which in 1989 helped form the Mason City Clinic. He retired from practice in 1990, having served the communities of North Iowa for 40 years. His uncle, Soren Westly, was a member of the staff of Mercy Hospital at its founding in 1915. His father, Gabriel Westly, and brother, Travis Westly, were also members of the staff for many years. His retirement from the staff of Mercy Hospital ended a 75 year period of service by Westly doctors. Dr. Westly served as President of the staff of Mercy Hospital, President of County Medical Society and President of American Society of Internal Medicine, Iowa Chapter. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, American College of Physicians, American Guild of Organists and the Mason City Community Concert Board. The cornerstone of his life was his faith, family, friends, medicine and music. Dr. Westly is survived by his wife, Dorothy; son, Dr. Stephen K. Westly and wife Dr. Ann (Deering) Westly of Ashville, NC; daughter, Elizabeth (Libby) de Caetani and husband Michael of Memphis, TN; 5 grandchildren, Erica Westly, Elizabeth Westly, John Westly, Katherine Carr and Andrew Carr; 2 brothers, Dr. Travis Westly of Mason City, Malcolm Westly of Tampa, FL; brother-in-law, Dr. George Kottemann of Peoria, IL; several nieces and nephews. Dr. Westly is preceded in death by his parents, Gabriel and Beatrice Westly; mother and father-in-law, Freda and William Kottemann; sister-in-law, Edith Westly and brother-in-law, Dr. William Kottemann.
