Dr. Robert M. Powell

Dr. Robert M. Powell, 92, of Mason City, IA, died Tuesday, April 3, 2018, at the Good Shepherd Health Center.

Per his wishes, his body was donated to the University of Iowa in Iowa City, IA.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, April 7, 2018, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 100 1st Street N.E., with Pastor Chuck Kelsey officiating.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM on Friday, April 6, 2018, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue.

Inurnment will take place in the First Congregational United Church of Christ Columbarium at a later date.

Memorials may be directed to the family of Robert Powell.

Robert was born February 2, 1926, in Mason City, the son of Marlin J.S. and Hazel F. (Holmes) Powell. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1943, and continued his education at Grinnell College before earning his Medical Degree from the University of Iowa. On August 28, 1948, Bob was united in marriage to Mary Kling in Iowa City. Following his Residency, he served in the U.S. Army for 2 years at Fort Hood in Killeen, TX. In 1956, he returned to Mason City where he practiced Psychiatry until his retirement in 1994. In the 1980’s, Bob and Art Gerk catalogued all the trees in Mason City. Following his retirement, Bob volunteered for the Community Kitchen, Renew Center, Meals on Wheels and Habitat for Humanity. He also took friends to Alzheimer meetings and made visits with residents of the Good Shepherd Health Center. Bob enjoyed spending time with his family – especially his grandchildren. He also enjoyed golfing, reading, traveling, movies, playing bridge and going to Birdsall’s. He was a lifelong member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ and past president of the Mason City Country Club.

Bob is survived by his wife of 69 years: Mary Powell of Mason City; 3 children: Randy Powell and wife Jacque of Santa Monica, CA, Jeff Powell of Mason City and Anne Brown and husband Scott of Mason City; 6 grandchildren: Kai Powell, Alana Powell and husband Chris Tucci, Ben Powell, Megan Powell and fiancé Jesse Spiegel, Sam Brown and wife Molly and Claire Brown; and 1 great grandchild: Camella King. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother: Bruce; and son: Greg.
