Dr. Terrance “Terry” E. Nettleton, 86, of Mason City, died Saturday, December 22, 2012, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit. A memorial mass will be held at 10:30 A.M., on Thursday, December 27, 2012, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 302 5th Street S.E., with Rev. John Gossman officiating. There will be a gathering of family and friends on Wednesday (December 26, 2012), from 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM, followed by a scriptural wake service at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue. Inurnment will be at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be directed to Newman Catholic Schools, American Cancer Society, or Hospice of North Iowa. Terry was born February 20, 1926, in Mason City, IA, the son of Thomas A. and Margaret (Walsh) Nettleton. He was a graduate from St. Joseph’s High School in Mason City and continued his education at Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI where he earned his undergraduate and Doctor of Dental Science Degree in 1947. After graduation, he joined his father in the dental practice at the Brick and Tile building in Mason City. On September 30, 1950, Terry married Bonnie M. Leaman at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. In 1951, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served in a MASH unit in Korea and was also stationed in Japan before he was honorably discharged as a Captain in 1953. He then returned to the dental practice with his father. He practiced dentistry for 45 years until his retirement in 1993. He valued spending time with his friends and family, particularly his grandchildren. He also enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting, sports, reading and traveling with his wife spending several winter months in Arizona. Terry was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He served on the St. Joseph’s parish council as the council president. Terry was committed to serving the Mason City community. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, American Legion, Mason City Country Club, and a life member of the American Dental Association. He served as an officer for local and state dental societies. He served on the Stebens Foundation and United Home Bank boards as well as committees at Mercy Hospital. He also served as a member and President of the Newman High School Board and later served on the Mason City School Board. Terry is survived by his wife of 62 years: Bonnie Nettleton of Mason City; his children: Cynthia Hauck and husband Dr. James of Spirit Lake, IA, Diane Lantvit and husband Edward of Fremont, WI, John Nettleton and wife Kathleen of Plymouth, MN, and Kurt Nettleton and wife Susy of Hopkins, MN; 7 grandchildren: Andrew, David, Jeffrey, Matthew, Grady, Thomas, and Emily; 1 step granddaughter: Molly McAdam: 4 great grandchildren: Maddy, Josie, Kate, and Olive; his siblings: Connie McCauley of Blaine, MN, Robert Nettleton and wife Pat of Hemet, CA, Richard Nettleton and wife Sue of Clear Lake, IA, Dr. Michael Nettleton and wife Mary of Mason City, Judy Herlyck and husband Greg of Pueblo, CO, JoAnn Rowan and husband Bill of San Antonio, TX, and Pat Gansen and husband John of Nora Springs, IA. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Thomas and his stepmother, Hazel.
