Mason City - Earl William Schutz, 78, of 934 11th St. N.E., died Wednesday, December 21, 2005 at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa. Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Friday at St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 4th St. SE with Pastor Paul C. Nelson officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 PM Thursday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Memorials may be directed to the Earl W. Schutz memorial fund. Earl was born on February 8, 1927 at the Story Hospital in Mason City, the son of William and Velma (Anderson) Schutz. He was baptized at Our Saviour?s Lutheran Church and confirmed at St. James Lutheran Church. He attended Mason City Schools and farmed southeast of Mason City. Earl married Jean E. McNary in Mason City on July 10, 1946, to this union five children were born. He served in the US Army during WWII ans was stationed in the Aliation Islands. After returning home from the service he was employed at McNary Construction, Cashway Lumber, Floyd Pinneke Construction and then as a carpenter with the Mason City School District and worked there for thirty years until his retirement in 1987. Earl was a member of the VFW, Mason City Area Retired School Personnel Association, St. James Lutheran Church, Monroe School Retirees and the Class of 1945. He also volunteered at the Community Kitchen and also Meals on Wheels. He also was involved in the construction of the Praire Playground at East Park. Earl enjoyed raising flowers and vegetables and took great pride in his garden. He was also proud of a popcorn machine he refurbished, that is now in Music Man Square. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed by his family. Earl is survived by his wife, Jean of Mason City; sons, William E. Schutz and wife Lorna of Mason City, David E. Schutz and wife Shelly of Mason City; daughter, Barbara J. Fitzgerald and husband Tom of Mason City; sons, John C. Schutz and wife Carol of Mason City, Dan S. Schutz and wife Kim of Sioux Falls, SD; grandchildren, Shelley (Josh), Jason, Brian (Melissa), Cory (Keitha), Paul (Ashley), Sarah (Kelly), Jeremy (Abby), Scott, Melissa, B.J. and Garett; great-grandchildren, Matthew, Zachery, Joshua, Austin, Kelly Jr., Beti-Jo, Dominick, Chylie, Joseph, and Preston; sisters, Evelyn Heagel of Manly and Donna Biggs and husband Glenn of Rockford, several nieces and nephews, cousins, relatives, friends and faithful dog Toby. Earl was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Arlene Dehnert; brother-in-laws, Alex Heagel and Don Dehnert and granddaughter, Kari Schutz in infancy.
