Emily Block

Emily Block, 99, of Mason City, died Tuesday, January 29, 2013, at Heritage Care and Rehab Center. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, January 31, 2013, at Grace United Methodist Church, 200 14th Street N.W., with Rev. Brent Hamilton officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the church service. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Emily Block memorial fund in care of the family. Emily was born September 17, 1913, in Britt, IA, the daughter of Henry and Emily (Herkes) Smidt. Emily was united in marriage to Walter Block in Britt, Iowa. Over the years, she worked in housekeeping, and retired from the Sheraton at the age of 78. Emily was a hard worker and self-sufficient. If there was a job to be done – she handled it herself. Emily enjoyed spending time with her family and spoiling her grandchildren. She also enjoyed gardening, taking care of her dog “Petey”, and her daily 10 AM tea time. Emily is survived by her daughter: Loretta Johnson of Mason City; 4 grandchildren: Vern Johnson and wife Julie, Vicki Davis and husband Al, Val Smith, and Victor “Dirk” Johnson; 8 great grandchildren: Chris and wife Amy, Misty, Nicky and husband Eric, Sara and husband Brett, Cody (Laurie), Aurora (Tony), Brandi (Troy), and Dave (Jessica); 19 great great grandchildren: Bailey, Taylor, Jacob, Makayla, Braiden, Iliana, Miranda, Keagan, Ryan, Jared, Justin, Lauren, Nico, Jace, Deacon, Jaylah, Devlin, Amarea, and Sienna; 4 siblings: Helen Smidt, Geraldine Pitkin, George Smidt, and Jenny Gorley. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1936; a daughter: Doris Block; and 9 siblings: Hanselmen, Ole, Henry Jr., Louis, Ben, Ann, Lena, Alice, and Fransis.

Cemetery:
Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery
