Evelyn L. Grunz, 81 a resident of Good Shepherd Health Center since 1994 passed away Saturday, February 28, 2004 at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City. Funeral services for Evelyn will be held 2:00 PM, Tuesday, March 2, 2004 at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 North Pennsylvania Avenue, with the Rev. Sarah Rohret Odoom of Grace United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the funeral home on Tuesday. Memorials may be directed to the Good Shepherd Telephone Reassurance Program or the Cerro Gordo Humane Society. Evelyn L. Grunz was born July 1, 1922 the daughter of Herman J. and Josephine A. (Pavek) Grunz in Mason City where they lived until July of 1960, when the family moved to Clear Lake. Evelyn graduated from Mason City High School in 1940 and from Mason City Junior College in 1942. Over the years, she had been employed at State Brand Creameries, Yelland and Hanes Book Store, and Northwestern Bell Telephone Company, first as an operator, then as an office worker, and finally as a tracer for the Engineering Department. She retired in December 1982 after 35 years of service. On March 8, 1943 Evelyn enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Women?s Reserve and served until November 8, 1945, when she received an honorable discharge with the rating of Corporal, at the El Toro, California Marine Corps Air Station. She was proud to have been a Marine and said her time spent in the service had some of the happiest experiences she had in her life, as she received training at Hunter College in New York City; Indiana University in Bloomington; Cherry Point and Edenton Marine Bases in North Carolina; and finally she was stationed in El Toro, California. When she returned to Mason City, she took flying lessons under the G.I. Bill of Rights. Evelyn loved her family, all animals (especially dogs and kitties), music and books, being an avid reader, and she was a loyal friend to many. Evelyn was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and a former member of Wa Tan Ye. She was predeceased by her father and mother, Herman and Josephine Grunz and a sister Gertrude Grunz. She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Herb Huebner (127 Walona Avenue, New Lenox, Illinois 60451), her aunt, Mrs. Avis Pavek and several cousins.
