Evonka Nielson

Evonka Nielson, 83, of Mason City, IA, died Tuesday, October 10, 2017, at Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, October 16, 2017, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue, with Rev. Kathleen R. Moore officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM on Sunday, October 15, 2017, at Major Erickson Funeral Home. Inurnment will take place at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the Evonka Nielson memorial fund in care of the family.

Evonka Stoynoff was born March 22, 1934, in Mason City, the daughter of immigrant parents: Nick and Tonna (Balaban) Stoynoff, of Bulgaria and Russia. Evonka lived in Mason City her entire life and attended Mason City schools. On August 25, 1956, she married Ron Nielson at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Mason City. She worked for First National Bank for 44 years as a bank teller and personal loan officer until her retirement in 1997. Evonka served on the MCHS Class of 1952 Reunion Committee since graduation. She enjoyed snow skiing, reading, cooking, bird watching and family gatherings. She also enjoyed time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren very much.

Evonka is survived by her husband of 61 years: Ron Nielson of Mason City; children: Eric Nielson and wife Carol of Omaha, NE, Heather Thompson and husband Bob of Mason City and Kurt Nielson and wife Yelena of Irvine, CA; 7 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; brother: Bill Stoynoff and wife Mary of Ventura, IA; and 2 aunts on her mother’s side.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a granddaughter: Katie Lynn Nielson, born to Eric and Carol Nielson: 9/23/1985 – 12/2/2000.
