Garry George Sahr was born on March 21, 1936, in Mason City, Iowa to Leonard and Sarah “Margaret” Sahr. He passed away peacefully with family at his side on March 31, 2023. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 6, 2023, at 10:30 a.m., at Faith Baptist Church, 1807 South Kentucky, with Pastor Tim Moore officiating. Interment will be held in Memorial Park Cemetery. A visitation will be held one hour prior to service time on Thursday. Memorials may be directed to the family of Garry Sahr.
Garry was a lifelong resident of Mason City, attending Mason City Schools. In 1958, while roller skating, he asked a young woman to skate and the rest is history. He married Shirley Halverson on June 23, 1959.
Garry worked for the Mason City School System as a custodian for over 35 years, retiring in 1994 due to challenges with his health. He spent many enjoyable retirement years engaged in his favorite activities, including woodworking, art, yard work, and spending time with his family. If you needed something fixed, he was the man to fix it.
Garry cherished his wife above all things. Together, they welcomed three children: Lorrie (Mark) Young of Mason City; Tim Sahr (Waterloo, Iowa); and Troy (Penny) Sahr, Chariton, Iowa. In addition, he was the proud grandfather of 15 grandchildren (Christopher Young, Ashley Schriver, Kallie Cooper, Reyna Reindl, Jordan Young, Matthew Young, Nathan Sahr, Cody Sahr, Gabrielle Young, Alex Young, Patricia Corkery, Caleb Sahr, Daisy Young, Elia Sahr and Bostyn Young. He also has three step-grandchildren, Katie and Chantel Hixson, and McKenzie Halferty , 18 great-grandchildren and 1 step-great-grandchild. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Garry was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Margaret Sahr, Brothers Milford, Arnold, and Paul Sahr and infant brother Eugene, and sister, Jane Roberts. Also preceding him in death is his grandson, Troy Andrew Sahr, Granddaughter Bria Sahr and daughter-in-law, Sarah Sahr.
Garry had the heart of a lion. He loved his family deeply and passionately and would do anything for them. He demonstrated a gentle soul and a loving heart. He was a man of faith, and his faith sustained him through multiple health challenges. No one loved more deeply and more selflessly and he has certainly earned his rest in the presence of God, his Father.
