George C. Merten, 71, of Mason City, died Monday, May 22, 2006 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit. Funeral services will be held 10:00 A.M. Friday (May 26, 2006) at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue with Rev. Larry Day of the Free Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00 P.M. ? 8:00 P.M. Thursday (May 25, 2006) at Major Erickson Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to the George C. Merten memorial fund. George was born on April 5, 1935 in Big Lake, Minnesota the son of Clyde R. and Ida (Adams) Merten. He attended school in Ventura. He was married to Jeanette Staley on March 15, 1958 in Canton, South Dakota. To this union three sons were born. George worked for Mason City Iron and Metal for sixteen years as a supervisor. In his free time he enjoyed camping, traveling and listening to country music. George was survived by his two sons; Douglas Merten and wife Laura of Killen, TX, Charles Merten and wife Myong of Texarkana, TX; daughters, Jenny Rappley of Spooner, WI, Denise Schaffer and husband Rod Day of St. Paul, MN, Debra and husband Dean Vant?hof of St. Paul, MN, seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary Auchampach of Nora Springs, Susan Wells of Rudd, Nancy Frye of Mason City, Betty Wells of Davenport, IA; brothers, Raymond Merten and wife Ruby of Tuscon, AZ, Jack Merten and wife Darlene of Clinton, IA. George was preceded in death by his parents, wife Jeanette in 1994, and son Roger Merten in 2006. Major Erickson Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements. 641-423-0934.
