Georgia G. Lofing

Georgia Gweneth (Gylden) Lofing, 77, of Mason City, formerly of Sandstone, MN, passed away February 14, 2012 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit. Memorial services will be held at a later date at St John's Lutheran Church, Finlayson Mn. Inurnment will be at the Finnish Cemetery - Finlayson, Mn. She was born May 27 1934, during The Great Depression and the North Dakota Dust Bowl in Bismark North Dakota to Seth and Linda (Heikkinen) Gylden. Georgia was the youngest of seven sisters. The sisters loved listening to the family radio picking up on the standards of the day and church hymns. Soon they were singing in six part harmony. During the 40'S the sisters were featured in 'Ripley's believe it or not'as the six singing sisters from Sandstone Minnesota whose initials were all GGG. Many likened their singing ability to the Lennon Sisters, but our family knew they were better! In 1957 Georgia married Robert Lofing. To this marriage they adopted a son in January of 1963. Georgia worked for most of her life as a secretary starting with the Mason City Chamber of Commerce. She was the first Secretary for the MacNider Art Museum which she called 'the best job I ever had' because it helped her explore her artsy side, including painting and sculpting. 1981 she returned to her parents home in Sandstone where she was employed by the East Central School District as an Elementary School secretary, during this job It was said that 'a day without Georgia's humor was like a day without sunshine'. Her last job was for the Superintendent of schools. Georgia retired in 1997, but never stopped helping people, she provided rides for those who couldn't drive and provided a safe house for battered women. She loved the english language and enjoyed asking people how a word was spelled or what its meaning was. Often she would ask us to spell an impossible word, if she asked how to spell that or it we would say t-h-a-t or i-t. She loved her property next to the state park and often you could find her mowing or chopping fire wood. The family wishes to thank the incredible staff at the Salvation Army Adult Day Care Health Center, Good Shepherd Health Center, and Hospice of North Iowa for their untiring work with the aged. Georgia is survived by a son John (Lisa) Lofing Mason City, grandchildren Jeremy of Atlanta Ga, Victoria, Eric and Brianna of Mason City a great grandson Carter John, many nieces and nephews and extended family scattered all over the world. A lifelong friend Vonnie True of Mason City. She was proceeded in death by her parents Seth and Linda Gylden, all her sisters, Gloria Gladys Dronen, Gene Geraldine Gylden, Glenora Genette Benson, Gertrude Gwendolyn Wendling, Gail Glenda Cook, Genell Gaylene Downs.
