Gilbert C. Johnson, 91, of Mason City, died Saturday, March 1, 2008 at the Good Shepherd Health Center. A Funeral Mass will be held 10:30 A.M. Thursday, March 6, 2008 at St. Josephs Catholic Church, 302 5th St. S.E. with Rev. Craig Steimel officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery with Military Honors performed by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Wednesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. with a Scriptural Wake Service held at 6:30 P.M. Memorials may be directed to the Gilbert C. Johnson memorial fund. Gilbert was born March 13, 1916 in Britt, Iowa the son of John H. and Annie M. (Baker) Johnson. He attended school in rural Hancock county, and attended through eighth grade. He enlisted in the Army on April 3, 1942 in Des Moines, Iowa. He was in the 3rd Army Division and was part of the 2nd wave onto Omaha Beach. He also served in the Battle of the Bulge and served under General Patton. He was honorably discharged on October 31, 1945 in Fort Knox, KY. After his return from the service he returned to Britt and worked for Fred Theil and drove gas truck until going to work for Clarence Dahl in his service station. He was married to Dorothy Mulert on November 18, 1946 in Britt. They moved to Mason City in 1957 and he went to work for Armours until his retirement in 1982. Gilbert loved working in his vegetable and flower garden; he enjoyed dancing, playing cards, watching western movies, fishing, hunting, and camping in his younger years with his family. He also had a passion for horses. Family was very important to him and he enjoyed the time he spent with them. He also enjoyed spending time at Pros Sandwich Shop for coffee with his friends. He was a member of the American Legion and a lifetime member of the Moose Lodge and also a fifty year member of the St. Josephs Catholic Church. He is survived by his son, Timothy Paul Johnson and wife Sue of Erlanger, KY; daughter, Karen Kay Johnson of Mason City; grandchildren, Chris Johnson and wife Deb of Rochester, MN and Scott Johnson and wife Cassie of Lomira, WI; great-grandson, Matthew James Johnson; sister-in-laws, June Kammerer and husband Leo of Cedar Rapids, Rita Berndt of Cedar Rapids, Ida Mulert of Dubuque, Iowa, Rita Mulert of Moline, IL; cousin, Eva Weiner of Bancroft, Iowa and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dorothy Johnson in 1993; siblings, Herbert, Clyde, Frank, and Homer Johnson; sister-in-laws, Mertie, Marcella, Mabel, Helen and Ruth Johnson; infant son, Ronald John Johnson; and great-granddaughter, Natalie Marie Johnson.
