Gladys L. Johnson

Gladys L. Johnson, 97, formerly of Mason City, died Friday (November 28, 2003) at the Manly Nursing & Rehab Center. Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM Wednesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue with the Rev. Terry Hamilton-Poore, First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Interment will be 2:30 PM Wednesday in Maplewood Cemetery, Luverne, Minnesota. Visitation will be one hour before services Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to Lime Creek Nature Center. Gladys was born October 16, 1906 in Rock County, Minnesota, near Luverne, the daughter of Harry and Tillie Clara (Dietrich) McDowell. She graduated valedictorian in her class in 1925 from Luverne High School and was awarded an elementary standard certificate in 1929 from St. Cloud Teachers College. Gladys taught school in Rock County, Magnolia and Amboy Minnesota for several years. She married L. Leo Johnson June 29, 1939 in the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The Johnson?s lived in Mason City, Fort Dodge and Oelwein. Gladys returned to Mason City in 1980. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where she had been active most of her life, Retired Teachers Association, PTA, Kappa Delta Pi and was involved in Cub Scouting. She enjoyed the Lime Creek Nature Center, gardening and wild flower photography. Gladys is survived by her son, David Johnson and wife Kay of Mason City; daughter, Janice Horak and husband Richard of Swisher; grandchildren, Nicholas Horak of Golden Valley, MN, Jeffrey Johnson and wife Dawn of Ida Grove, Lara Diekema and husband TJ of Mason City; great granddaughter, Casey Johnson and great grandson, Luke Johnson both of Ida Grove. Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; husband, L. Leo Johnson in 1964; sister, Lucille Lee and grandson, Daniel Horak.
