Glenda Evans

Mason City - Glenda Myrle Evans, 71, of Mason City died Tuesday, April 19, at the Hospice of North Iowa of complications from a lengthy illness. Funeral services for Glenda will be held at 2 PM Friday at First United Methodist Church, 119 South Georgia Avenue with Rev. Jim Stiles officiating. Visitation will be from 4 ? 6 PM on Thursday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 North Pennsylvania Avenue. Interment will be held at a later date. Glenda was born December 31, 1933, in rural Winnebago County near Buffalo Center, Iowa, the last and eleventh child of Aaron Wayne and Iva Ozelia (Orr) Berryhill. The Depression years were hard for the farming family, but the children all worked toward higher education and an appreciation of social service. Glenda was graduated from the State University of Iowa in 1957 with a B.S. degree in nursing, and she took great pride in being an Iowa Hawkeye and in her career as an R.N. in geriatric nursing. She worked for many years at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Mason City and at the nursing home in Manly, and after retirement she worked as an in-home nurse for elderly patients. She was married to Glenn Arlo Evans, Sr., in 1956, and they made their homes in North Dakota, Florida and Iowa. Glenda looked back on the time in Florida as some of her happiest with her young children. While living in Plymouth, Iowa, Glenda was instrumental in organizing the town?s Centennial celebration, and while her older children were in school in the North Central Community School district she served as president of the PTA and worked hard to get weight-lifting equipment for the student-athletes. Glenda enjoyed painting in earlier years but abandoned that for a love of bridge, 500, Scrabble, hosting parties for friends and family and of writing numerous letters to the Editor to express her heart-felt opinions. In 2002, she planned and organized a three day family reunion in Wilkinson Park, which was attended by many family members and enjoyed by all. In the past few years, she began publishing a quarterly newsletter for her siblings, their spouses and the entire Berryhill clan (if she had their address, they were on the mailing list!). She began the newsletter as a tribute to her brother Alan who was killed in action in Europe in WWII, but she published nearly anything her family wanted to share. She relished their letters and their calls. Glenda is survived by many loving family members: Her four children: Michael Allen and his wife Marcia of Thompson; Glenn Arlo, Jr., and his wife Sarah of Key West, Florida; Patricia Evans Whitfield and her husband Greg of Manly; and Carolynn (Sally) Augusta Evans of Iowa City; eight grandchildren: Megan, Jennifer, Leman, Emily, Amanda, Glenn Arlo, III, Scott and Ryan; three sisters, Ada Wubben of Buffalo Center, Frances Wubben of Fort Dodge, Edith Andrews of Mason City, and two brothers, Gerald of Harvard, Illinois and LeRoy of Fort Dodge. She is survived by many nieces, nephews, and many friends. She also shared her home in the past few years with her dear cat named Shickie, and in earlier years, her beloved pugs named Lester and Mugsy. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers (Irvin, Boyd, Clinton, and Alan) and one sister (Marian). Glenda will be remembered for her love of fun, her dry sense of humor and her delight in her children and grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to the Glenda Evans memorial fund.
