Guymon Sears, 90, of 1037 19th Street SW, died Wednesday, March 1, 2006 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit. Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM Saturday at the First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia with Rev. Jim Stiles officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery with full military rites conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Friday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue and continue at the church one hour before the service. Memorials may be given to Hospice of North Iowa. Guymon was born May 24, 1915 near Galt, Iowa the son of C.H. and Emma (Stokes) Sears. His parents homesteaded in a soddy hut in Harvestry, Oklahoma before moving to the Mason City area at an early age. Guymon graduated from Mason City High School in 1934. In 1942, he went to Alaska to work on the Alcan Highway. Guymon served in the United States Army during WW II. He was stationed in Yokohama, Japan and served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre. Guymon was awarded the American Theatre Service Ribbon, WW II Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Following his discharge, he started farming with his father west of Mason City and farmed until his retirement in 1984. He then moved to Mason City. Guymon was a member of the First United Methodist Church, lifetime member of VFW Post #733, lifetime Hawkeye IOOF and the Moose Lodge. He served on the North Iowa Fair Board for 20 years. Guymon is survived by a son, John T. Sears and wife Leota of Mason City; daughter, Opal Jane Sears of Mason City; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; very special friend of 35 years, Maxine Groesbeck of Sheffield; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Guymon was preceded in death by his parents, former wife, Virginia Failor; 3 brothers, Thomas, James and Tilman; 3 sisters, Opal Sears, Lavalle Huber and Beatrice Dyre.
