Harold W. Paine

Harold W. Paine, 86, of Mason City, died Friday, May 25, 2007 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City. Memorial services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, May 31, 2007 at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 100 1st St. N.E. with Pastor Patti Aurand officiating with Military Honors performed by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association. Inurnment will be in Park Hill Cemetery in Bloomington, IL at a later date. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 4:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. at Major Erickson Funeral Home & Crematory, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave with a Masonic Service at 6:00 PM. In Lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Hospice of North Iowa or the First Congregational United Church of Christ. Harold William Paine was born May 26, 1920 in Tremont, Illinois, the son of James W. and Nellie (Thompson) Paine. He graduated from Tremont High School in 1940. He then attended Illinois State University in Normal, IL one year until he entered into the Army on October 17, 1941 and served in Africa, Italy, France, and entered into Germany until the war ended. He served until November 7, 1945 until he was honorably discharged. In 1946 he returned to Illinois State University graduating in June of 1948. On June 1, 1947 he married Dorothy Taylor in the Normal Christian Church. He began his teaching career at Minier Community High School. In 1951 he graduated from the University of Northern Colorado with a Masters Degree in American History. He then moved to Phoenix, AZ, where he taught at West High School for seventeen years until moving to Mason City where he taught business at North Iowa Community College for eighteen years, he retired on May 26, 1985. He volunteered at KCMR radio for nearly twenty years. He was a 57 year Mason and was a member of the High Twelve Club, Normal Lodge #673, 50 year member of the Eastern Star, American Legion, and Phi Delta Kappa Fraternity for 56 years. He was also a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ for nearly forty years. Harold is survived by his wife, Dorothy Paine of Mason City; sons, Dr. Douglas Paine and wife Linda of Terre Haute, IN, and Dr. Gregory Paine and wife Diane of Tucson, Arizona; grandchildren, Drew and Blake Paine, Terre Haute, IN, Tavia Paine of Tucson, Arizona; sister, Hazel Brandt of East Peoria, IL, Verla Goss, of Pekin, IL Mary Gardner of Pekin, IL. He was preceded in death by brother, Cecil, Russell and Paul Paine; sisters, Edna Sassman, Margaret Blue and Velda Whitney.
