Helen V. Aspland, 90, of Mason City died Monday, April 14, 2003 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit. Funeral services conducted by the Eastern Star and White Shrine will be held 1:30 PM, Thursday, April 17, 2003 at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 North Pennsylvania Avenue. Interment will be held at a later date in Good Hope Cemetery in Ava, Missouri. Visitation for Helen will be 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Wednesday, April 16, 2003 at Major Erickson Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the Eastern Star and White Shrine of Mason City or Hospice of North Iowa. Helen was born February 22, 1913 the daughter of James O. Shultner and Vera V. Kirk in Vaughn, Montana. In 1914 Helen?s parents moved to Huron, South Dakota where she attended school and graduated from Huron High School and went on to one year of college and later receiving a two year teaching certificate. She was united in marriage to Belden W. Dukes on August 27, 1935. Helen and Belden shared many years together until his death on September 5, 1969. She was later united in marriage to Carl E. Aspland on April 19, 1980 in the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Carl died on March 9, 1998 in Mason City. Helen enjoyed a 17 ½ year career with the Austin Public School System as a bookkeeper. She retired from the Austin Public School System on July 1, 1977. Helen was an active member of several organizations: Past Matron of the Easter Star of Austin, MN and Mason City; Past High Priestess of the White Shrine of Jerusalem of Mason City; President of the Past Matrons Club of both Mason City and Austin, MN; Retired Secretaries Club of Austin, MN; A.A.R.P; and the Mason City Senior Center. Helen was also an organist for many years for the Eastern Star and White Shrine in Iowa and Minnesota. Helen is survived by: Daughter: Pamela Watters and husband Charles of Springfield, MO Sister:Janette Hall of Huron, South Dakota Grandchildren: Shawna Highfill and husband Michael of Springfield, MO Keith Watters of Springfield, MO Great-Grandchildren: Alycia and Dylan Highfill Step-Daughter: Sherryl A. Pippert of Mason City Step-Son: Carl E. Asplund JR. of Bristol, Connecticut Step-Daughter: Lynnea A. Schafer and husband John of Belpre, Ohio 6 Step Grandchildren and 4 step-great grandchildren Helen was preceded in death by her parents, first husband Belden Dukes, second husband Carl E. Asplund, sister Betty Shultner, and one step grandson.
