Helen G. Vlantes

Helen G. Vlantes, 86, of 54 N. Willowgreen Court, died Sunday, January 22, 2006 at the I.O.O.F. Home. Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM Wednesday at the Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, 1311 2nd St. SW with Rev. Joseph Mirowski officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 6:00 PM Tuesday at the Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church. A Trisagion service will be held at 6:00 PM at the church. Memorials may be given to the Helen G. Vlantes Memorial Fund. Helen was born December 24, 1919 in Agios Lukas, Evias Greece the daughter of Frank and Angelica (Skarlis) Kentrota. She received her education in Greece. Helen immigrated to Iowa in 1947. She was united in marriage to George Vlantes May 4, 1947 in Mason City. Helen became a naturalized citizen on April 26, 1967. She worked in food services for Mercy Hospital for 25 years, retiring in 1988. Following retirement, Helen then volunteered at the hospital. Helen was a devoted member of the Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church. She loved her family, church, baking and cooking. She was known as Yaya to many. Helen is survived by a son, Nicholas Vlantes and wife Darlys of Mason City; daughter, Angelica Hugi of Mason City; grandchildren, Jason Hugi and wife Lisa of Mason City, Sarah Wogstad and husband Kenneth of Mason City, Nicole Vlantes and special friend Brad Meyer of Rockwell, Christina Vlantes and fiancé Andrew DeNio of Dows, Travis Vlantes of Mason City; great grandchildren, Brandon Slotness, Emily Hugi, Lauren Hugi, Jayden Vlantes, Rhiannon Wogstad; sister, Katherine Pappajohn and husband Luka of Athens, Greece; many nieces and nephews. Helen was preceded in death by her husband, George in 1985; brothers, John and Paul Kentrota in 2004
