Helmer N. Hjelle

Helmer Norman Hjelle, 93, of Mason City, IA passed away Thursday, September 28, 2023, at the Good Shepherd Health Center.  Memorial services will be held at 11 AM Tuesday, October 3, 2023, at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 North Pennsylvania Ave. Mason City, Iowa, with Pastor Dan Dahl officiating.  Inurnment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.  Family will greet friends just before services on Tuesday.

Helmer was born July 29, 1930, the son of Hans and Nettie (Hamson) Hjelle in Mason City, Iowa.  Helmer was united in marriage to Nita True on August 18, 1947, in Kirksville, MO.

Helmer and Nita were people of habit, their children knew it was Sunday because there would be a stack of country vinal records spinning on the record player.  Helmer spent many hours crafting woodworking projects, cooking up a good meal or just sitting at the table enjoying what had been prepared.  He was a “car guy” who loved hot rods and fast cars.  Helmer was a pipe fitter at Armour Packing Plant for many years.  He was a proud member of the union.  Helmer was also a longtime member at Trinity Lutheran Church.

Those thankful for having shared in Helmer’s life include his children, Larry (Margaret) Hjelle, Marty (Nancy) Hjelle, Robin Hjelle; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Hjelle was preceded in death by his wife, Nita; two daughters, Sally Anderson, Sue Johnson; three sons, Hans Hjelle, Leland Hjelle, Mickey Hjelle; two grandchildren, Amanda Hjelle, Emily Hjelle; daughter in law, Joy Hjelle; three sisters, Lillian Marsh, Beverly Smidt, Bonnie King; two brothers, Newell Trustin and Oscar Hjelle.
