MASON CITY Henry Arends, age 85, of Mason City, died Saturday, November 21, 2009, at the IOOF Home in Mason City. Graveside services for family and friends will be held 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, November 28, 2009, at Memorial Park Cemetery, with Pastor Tammy Swanson Draheim of First Covenant Church officiating. A gathering of friends and family will be held Friday evening from 5 7 P.M. at Major Erickson Funeral Home; 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. Memorials may be directed to the Henry Arends Memorial Fund in care of the family.
Henry was born January 26, 1924, on the family farm in Shell Rock, IA, the son of John and Hermiene Minnie (Bronsema) Arends. He attended school in the Nora Springs area through eighth grade. He was married to Marlene A. Pietersen on June 8, 1957 in Mason City. Henry worked 33 years for Northwestern States Portland Cement Company before retiring in 1986. He enjoyed wood working, reading, feeding wildlife, and especially his grandchildren.
He is survived by his two children, Deb Ward and husband, Paul, of Plymouth, IA, Russell and wife, Lori, of Clear Lake; four grandchildren: Luke and Ashley Ward of Plymouth, Leah and Caitlin Arends of Clear Lake; two step grandchildren, Jason Baumann, Rachel Bendickson; one step great grandchild, Gage Bendickson; brother, Maynard Arends and wife, Dorothy; sister; Frieda Dow.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marlene; sister, Maime.
