Herbert L. Kennedy, 85, of Mason City, died Saturday, June 2, 2007 at his home. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Wednesday at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania, with Rev. Steve Palo officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 PM Tuesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue, and continue at the church one hour before the service. Memorials may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church. Herbert was born June 20, 1921 in Mason City, the son of Harold and Elsina (Harlan) Kennedy. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1939, and continued on with a four year carpenter apprenticeship with Davey and Moen before becoming head of the company. On July 19, 1945, he was united in marriage to Doris Jensen. Herbert was in the Army Air Corp. and served in WWII. Herbert enjoyed fishing, reading, flying planes and volunteer work. He was on the Mason City Foundation Board and had been a volunteer superintendent ever since the board was constituted, he oversaw much of the building of the Prairie Playground in East Park, served as superintendent of the refurbishing of the Meredith Willson Boyhood Home, served as superintendent of the refurbishing of the Marjorie Sale Home, served as a volunteer at ?The Music Man Square? project for 12 years, served as superintendent of rebuilding the Frank Lloyd Wright Stockman House, served as the YMCA Chair of remodeling of the ?Y? in the 1970?s, was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church and had helped with many construction projects of the church. Herb served as volunteer superintendent for the remodeling of the Decker House. He was a great recruiter of volunteers for many projects including the ?Popcorn Wagon?. He received many awards including the 1975 ??Y? Man of the Year? award, the 1992 ?Friend of Preservation? award, the 1998 ?Distinguished Alumni? award and the 2002 ?Service above Self? award. He liked to be active and enjoyed helping people. Herbert is survived by his children: Victoria TeKippe and husband Michael of Portland, IA, Kathleen Klink and husband Bruce of Menomonee Falls, WI, Scott Kennedy and wife Rebecca of Safety Harbor, FL, and Lori Roberts and husband Steve of Boone, IA, ten grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Doris in 2006.
