MASON CITY: Evelyn Johnson, 88, of Mason City, died Saturday, October 24, 2015 at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Friday, October 30, 2015 at the First Baptist Church, 125 East State Street with Rev. Ron Stein officiating. Interment will be held in the Grant Center Cemetery, Fertile. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Thursday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue and continue at the church on Friday one hour prior to the service. Memorials may be directed to the Evelyn Johnson Memorial Fund.
Evelyn was born April 10, 1927 in Stanley, North Dakota the daughter of Ole and Marie (Anderson) Johnson. Her family moved from North Dakota to Iowa when Evelyn was 14 years old. She graduated from Kensett High School and went on to attend and graduate from Drake University earning her degree in elementary education. Her first teaching job was in Rake, Iowa followed by a few years in Marshalltown. Evelyn then interviewed for a teaching position at Wilson Elementary School in Mason City. She was offered the position and taught at Wilson for several years. Following the closing of Wilson, Evelyn moved over to teach at Jefferson Elementary retiring in 1993. Evelyn was considered the “glue” of the family always concerned about the needs of all her family members.
Evelyn is survived by a brother-in-law, Russell Olson of Fairfax, Iowa; 21 nieces and nephews and many great and great-great and great-great-great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and 9 siblings, Hazel Lundt, Helmer, Earl, Walter and Adolph Johnson, Florence Sanderson, Olga Ouverson, Nora Mogk and Elvira Olson.
