Irvin Frederick Zorn, 92, a resident of the IOOF Home, passed away there, Tuesday, January 10, 2012. Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M. Monday (January 16, 2012) at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. with Pastor Sean McRoberts of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Visitation will be 3:00 – 5:00 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery with Military Honors performed by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association. Memorials may be directed to the IOOF Home or Hospice of North Iowa. Irvin was born December 9, 1919, to Frederick and Ida (Harzfeldt) Zorn. He was the youngest of five and the only son. He graduated in 1938 from Mason City High School. He served in the Iowa National Guard from 1937 to 1940. He did farm work on the Bisgrove and Currier Farms while in school and after graduation. He also worked at Bill Garfin’s grocery store and did carpentry work. He met Ruth Evelyn Morris of Osage, Iowa. They were married on April 24, 1943. Irvin was drafted into the United States Army in June of 1944. He served with the 117th Cavalry Recon Squadron Mechanized in France and Germany. He was honorably discharged in June of 1946. Following military service, Irvin worked several jobs before going to work at the Fareway Store in 1949. He retired as manager in 1980. He loved to dance with his wife, play cards, ride his motorcycle, farm work on a tractor, play the organ, fish, woodworking and spending time with family and friends. Irvin is survived by his children; son, Fredrick (Mary Etta) Zorn of Cedar Rapids, daughter Jennifer (Mark) Cottrell of Kensett. Grandchildren, Ryan Zorn, Trenton (Heather) Zorn of Cedar Rapids, William (Michelle) Cottrell of Northwood, and Gretchen Cottrell (fiancée Aaron Stone) of Manly. Great-grandchildren, Connor Zorn, Annara, Samuel, Alex and Sarah Cottrell, a special niece, Laurine Sheahan and many other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Ruth of 51 years, four sisters; Edna, Ethel, Gladys, Dorothy, their husbands and special friend Vera. The Family would like to extend special thanks to his friends and caregivers at the IOOF Home and the Hospice of North Iowa.
