MASON CITY: James J. Schaack, 89, of Mason City died Friday, January 23, 2015 at the IOOF Home. A funeral mass will be held 10:30 AM Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at Epiphany Parish St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 5th Street SE with Rev. Craig Steimel and Rev. John Gossman, concelebrants. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Tuesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue. A Scriptural Wake service will be held at 6:30 PM at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the James Schaack Memorial Fund. Jim was born November 22, 1925 in Waterloo, Iowa the son of John and Helen (Kurth) Schaack. He graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1943. Jim married Marian L. Johnson October 16, 1948 in Waterloo. Jim worked at the Waterloo Post Office for 25 years as a mail clerk. He retired in 1989. Following retirement, Jim and Marian moved to Mason City in 1991 to be closer to family. Jim enjoyed traveling, woodworking and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. He was a member of Epiphany Parish St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus in Waterloo. Jim is survived by his 7 children, Maria Kaumans and special friend Harry of Newton, Kansas, Bill (Ladonna) Schaack of Riverside, Kathleen (Nasko) Tzotchev of Phoenix, Arizona, Don (Trish) Schaack of Plymouth, Minnesota, Paul Schaack of Cold Bay, Alaska, Sarah ( Chad) Banks of Mason City and Wayne (Julie) Schaack of Phoenix, Arizona; 13 grandchildren, Adam Kaumans, Justin, Jerod and James Schaack, Danielle Lopez, Adam Klein, Jeremy, Candace and Gage Schaack, Erica and Kyle Ronemous, Chelsea Galetti and Brandon Schaack; many great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; 1 sister, Dolores Burdett of Florida; several nieces and nephews and long-time special friend, Marlys Haugen of Leland. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Marian in 1995; infant daughter, Lynn Marie; grandson, Jason Kaumans and 1 sister, Maxine Loesche.
