Mason City James Loyd Templeton, 80, of Mason City, died Monday, June 21, 2010, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit. Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M. on Friday, June 25, 2010, at the First Covenant Church, Hwy 122, at South Ohio, with the Rev. Marty Garrett officiating. Interment will be held in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00 7:00 PM on Thursday, June 24, 2010, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue. In Lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the James Loyd Templeton memorial fund in care of the family.
James Loyd Templeton was born in Sedalia, Missouri on October 15, 1929, the son of Benjamin and Cora Ethel (Bowers) Templeton. As a young boy the family moved to Iowa, first to Mason City, then to Clear Lake where he and his dad operated Temps Service. On December 12, 1948 he married Betty Andrew of Mason City, to this union two sons were born, Dennis and Jamie. He began working for S & R Chevrolet in Mason City in 1950 and was employed there for 36 years, first as an automotive mechanic and later as a shop foreman. He worked for Schukei for a number of years also. Loyd received his first Chevrolet technician certificate at the age of 17, at that time being the youngest certified mechanic in General Motors history. He later received a Master Technician certificate.
Loyd enjoyed fishing, hunting and playing cards with friends. He also enjoyed church activities including the small groups. He also liked to bowl at tournament time. Loyd was a long time member of the First Covenant Church of Mason City, having served as Church Chairman, Financial Secretary, Trustee, Usher, and Sunday school teacher. He liked preparing pheasant suppers for the church during hunting season, with his good friend Don Stangler. He loved Missouri and spending winters there. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Loyd is survived by his wife, Betty of Mason City; his two sons, Dennis (Julie) Templeton of Mason City, Jamie of Columbia, MO; granddaughters, Angela (Jason) Krage of Sioux City, IA, and Amanda Templeton of Mason City; and a great-granddaughter, Baby Krage on the way; sister-in-law, Marlys Templeton; brother-in-law, Dwayne Hahn, several cousins and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Joe; sister-in-law, Fran; brother, Tim and sister, Ethel Hahn.
