Jane A. Alvarez, 69, of Iowa City, IA, formerly of Mason City, IA, died Thursday, August 29, 2013, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 A.M. on Tuesday, September 3, 2013, at Wesley United Methodist Church, 1405 S. Pennsylvania Avenue – Mason City, with Rev. Steve Hansen officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM, with an Eastern Star Service at 5:30 PM on Monday (September 2, 2013) at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue – Mason City. Interment will be at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Jane Alvarez memorial fund in care of the family. Jane was born November 30, 1943, in Ogden, UT, the daughter of Ted and Helen (Eveland) Thornblade. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1962 and continued her education at Hamilton Business College in Mason City. Over the years, she worked as a Secretary/Receptionist for the Mason City Dental Office located in the Brick and Tile Building (12 years) and as a cashier at Hy-Vee West (17 years) before her retirement in 2004. In 2006, Jane moved to Davenport, IA – where she attended Asbury Methodist Church. In June of 2013, Jane moved to Iowa City. Jane was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church – where she belonged to Church Circle. She was also a member of the Eastern Star – White Shrine. Jane enjoyed playing cards – especially Cribbage and Rummy, playing Bingo, taking car rides, and in her younger years – fishing. She loved social gathering and entertaining her family and friends. She was very proud of her Teddy Bear and Salt & Pepper Collection. Jane is survived by her 3 children: Jon Paul Alvarez and wife Donna of Wilton, IA, Jim Alvarez of Davenport, IA, Joanne Tilley and husband Mark of Dayton, TN; 9 grandchildren: Mark Jr., Brandon, Dustin, Brittney, Jeremy, Cody, Katlyn, Lance and Myranda; 11 great grandchildren; her siblings: Suzanne Hegemier of Texas, Mary Jo Nelson and husband Jerald of Vacaville, CA, Nancy Johnson and husband Curt of Edmond, WA, Sally Lau and husband Grayden of Garner, Ron Thornblade and wife Betty of Arizona, Barbara Rassmussen of the Hawaiian Islands and Tim Thornblade of Texas; sister-in-law: Arlene Thorndale of Mason City; very special friend: Kenny Biggerstaff of Davenport; and special cousin and friend: Carolyn Keeney and husband Don of Bettendorf, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother: Tom Thorndale and a brother in infancy.
