Janice L. Jan" Craun

December 3, 1937 — April 6, 2008

Janice L. Jan Craun, 70, of Mason City joined her lord on Sunday, April 6, 2008 at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa.  She had faced ALS, Lou Gehrigs disease, with a valiant determination and never once complained. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Avenue with Rev. James Magelssen officiating.  Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Wednesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue and continue at the church one hour prior to the service.  Memorials may be given to Opportunity Village, Box 622, Clear Lake or Trinity Lutheran Church.  Janice LaFayee (Friedland) Craun was born December 3, 1937 in Viborg, South Dakota the daughter of Carl and Agnes (Folvik) Friedland.  She attended country school thru third grade and then school in Wakonda, South Dakota graduating in 1955. Janice continued her education at the University of South Dakota, majoring in Elementary Education.  In 1957, She started her teaching career in the Centerville, South Dakota school system where her father had been school superintendent previously, 4 years, then going to Hartley, Iowa, 3 years, where she met her husband, Kent, then to Jackson, Minnesota, 2 years, and moving to Mason City where she finished her career at Northern Trails Area Education Association as an aide in speech and language pathology.  Jan married Kent Craun August 17, 1963 in the Methodist Church in Wakonda.  They moved to Mason City in 1969.  Jan was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church since 1976 where she led the Bible study for Rebecca Circle and played hand bells.  Jan enjoyed walking, square dancing, going to band concerts, and being an advocate for the mentally disabled.  She served as Secretary for Iowa Guardianships Inc. for many years.  She enjoyed being a volunteer at Hospice of North Iowa and Mercy Medical Center North Iowa. 
 
Jan is survived by her husband, Kent of Mason City, sons, Grayson of Opportunity Village in Clear Lake, Stace of Mason City, daughter, Crystal Cary of Mason City, grandchildren, Amanda, Mariah and Christopher Cary, brother Doug Friedland and wife Doris of Sheldon, Iowa, sister, Joyce Seymour and husband Allen of Sioux City, Iowa, brother-in-law, Bill Bodey of Snohomish, Washington, sister-in-law, Ruby Craun of Panora, Iowa and many nieces and nephews.
 
Jan is preceded in death by an infant daughter, and her parents, Carl and Agnes Friedland
