Jean L. Boomhower, 89, of Mason City, died Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at the Good Shepherd Health Center. Memorial services will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, April 8, 2013, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue, with Rev. Kent Mechler, Chaplain – Good Shepherd Health Center officiating. There will be a gathering of family and friends from 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM on Sunday (April 7, 2013) at Major Erickson Funeral Home. Inurnment will be in Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa, 232 2nd Street S.E., Mason City, IA 50401. Jean was born January 25, 1924, at St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital in Mason City, IA, the daughter of Byron Ricks and Helen (Beemer) Houser. She grew up in the home of her grandparents, Dr. and Mrs. G.N. Beemer, and attended Jackson Heights Garden Country Day School in Jackson Heights, NY. Jean graduated from Mason City High School in 1941, and continued her education at Mason City Junior College (1 year) and the University of Iowa in Iowa City, IA (3 years). She married Leslie L. Boomhower on April 7, 1945, in Mason City. To this union three children were born, Daniel, Susan and Robert. Jean spent the first 51 years of married life on an acreage northwest of Mason City until she and her husband moved into Mason City. Jean was active in St. John’s Episcopal Church – where she taught Sunday School, PTA and League of Women Voters while her children were growing up. Jean was a homemaker, the Associate Editor of the POAC Magazine and a book-keeper for her husband in his Law office. Jean was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority, PEO - Chapter GN and the YMCA. She loved and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, swimming, music, knitting, reading, and chocolate. Jean is survived her children: Daniel Boomhower and wife Cheryl of Apple Valley, MN, Susan Faber and husband Larry of Ventura, IA, and Robert Boomhower of Concord, CA; 2 beloved grandchildren: Dana Boomhower of Apple Valley and Sara Faber of Ventura; special niece: Judy Johnson and husband Robert of Mason City; 1 sister: Sara Hayworth and her daughter Lisa, both of San Diego, CA. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband in 2008.
