Jerry D. Frey

August 21, 1941 — September 3, 2016

Jerry D. Frey, 75, of Mason City, passed away Saturday, September 3, 2016 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit. Memorial services will be held at 5:30 PM Wednesday, September 7, 2016 at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 North Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with Rev. Kevin Jones officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Jerry was born August 21, 1941 the son of George and Florence (Harmon) Frey in rural Thornton, Iowa. He graduated from Sheffield High School in 1959. Following high school Jerry enlisted in the United States Navy and honorably served his country during the Vietnam era.

On January 7, 1967 Jerry was united in marriage to Beverly Jean Svendsen in New Hampton, Iowa. To this union John and Mica were born.

Jerry’s life revolved around his family, particularly his grandchildren. He enjoyed trap shooting and was a member of the Ventura Gun Club; this hobby extended to coaching and mentoring young people with an interest in the sport. Jerry served others in various ways during his life. He was the fire chief of the Nora Springs volunteer fire department and was instrumental in bringing the first ambulance service to the community. His government service continued with 24 years as a rural route carrier for the US Postal Service, which also included many years as a union steward. He coached baseball, attended many events for children and grandchildren, and was also a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Those thankful for having shared in Jerry’s life include his wife Beverly; son John P. (Julie) Frey of Denver, CO; daughter Mica M. (Jeffrey) Harris of Mason City, IA; sister Mary Jane (Dallas) Etnier of Sheffield, IA; three grandsons: Zachary, Caleb and Noah Harris of Mason City, IA; granddaughter Lydia Frey of Denver, CO; great granddaughter Vera Harris of Mason City, IA, and special friends to Jerry and the entire Frey family: Adri Whitehurst and her daughters Joci and Kelsi of Mason City, IA.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, George and Florence Frey.
