Joan Marie Tickal, 75, of Mason City, IA, died Friday, July 18, 2014, at Heritage Care Center. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, July 21, 2014, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue, with Rev. Sean McRoberts of First United Methodist Church officiating. Visitation will be from 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM on Sunday July 20, 2014, at Major Erickson Funeral Home. Inurnment will take place in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Joan Tickal memorial fund in care of the family. The family requests casual attire. “Come as you are”. Joan was born July 9, 1939, in Iowa City, IA, the daughter of Cecil W. and Velma B. (Morgan) Abbott. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1957. Joan married Ronald Smith and to this union three children were born: Jody, Lori and Michael. Joan was later united in marriage to Donald Richard Tickal on March 30, 1968, at the First United Methodist Church in Mason City. To this union was one child: Timothy. Over the years, Joan owned and operated Rags to Riches in the Sears Shopping Center (3 years), Mercy Hospital Cafeteria (9 years), and Target – Price Change Crew (10 ½ years), before her retirement in 1997. Joan enjoyed spending time with her family – especially her grandchildren. She also enjoyed watching TV – particularly IPT, Shopping, riding her scooter, and being outdoors. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, past President of MOCA (Military Order of the Cooties Auxiliary), past Grand President State of Iowa, and a former member of the VFW Women’s Auxiliary. Joan was a wonderful person who loved to laugh as much as she loved making others laugh. She will be greatly missed. Joan is survived by her husband of 46 years: Donald Tickal of Mason City; her children: Jody Adams and husband Mike (Doc) of Mason City, Lori Goodenough and husband Scott of Mason City, Michael Smith and wife Meredy of Phoenix, AZ, Timothy Tickal and wife Heather of Mason City, and James Tickal of Minneapolis, MN; 9 grandchildren: Sara Adams of Phoenix, Kris Adams of Mason City, Alisha Best and husband Jake of Minneapolis, Brandon Smith of Mason City, Addison Smith of Phoenix, Ainsley Smith of Phoenix, Courtney Tickal of Mason City, Bailey Tickal of Mason City, and Kylee Tickal of Mason City. She is also survived by 2 great grandchildren: Jacob and Dylan, both of Minneapolis. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother: Robert Abbott.
