Joan Newell

Mason City, Iowa Joan Newell, age 82, of Mason City, died Thursday, December 31, 2009, at the Heritage Care Center in Mason City. Memorial services will be held Tuesday, January 5, 2010, at 2:30 P.M. at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with Rev. Alan Sheldon of Church of Christ officiating. A gathering of friends and family will take place an hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Joan Newell Memorial Fund in care of the family.


Joan was born on February 25, 1927, in Fenton, Iowa, to Alfred and Merle Meyers. She attended schools in the Fenton and Algona areas before graduating from Buena Vista. She worked as an English teacher before spending most her life as a homemaker. Joan was married to David Newell for 22 years before he died in 1972. She enjoyed music, crocheting, and especially her family. She will be missed dearly be all who loved and knew her.

Joan is survived by her two sons, Curtis Newell of Clear Lake, Todd Newell of Mason City; two daughters, Lori Newell of Mason City, Sheri Anderson of Phoenix, AZ; four grandchildren, Chris, Stephanie, Jennifer, and Tommy Anderson, all of Phoenix; sister Betty Weisbrod.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, David; brothers-in-law, Beryl Newell, Ben Newell; sisters-in-law, Pearl Vickstrom, Bert Newell.
