Joanne C. Sberal

Joanne C. Sberal, matriarch of the Sberal clan, passed away February 4, 2024, at the Sheffield Care Center, surrounded by her family and beloved dog, Chloe.  She was 96 years old.
 
 A funeral mass will be held Saturday, June 8, 2024 at 10 AM, at Epiphany Parish Holy Family Catholic Church with Rev. Neil Manternach, Celebrant.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to the mass at the church.  Inurnment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.
 
 Joanne was born June 21, 1927, the youngest child of the late Ord and Matilda Wallace in North Bend, NE.  She attended grade school there until the family moved to Osceola, NE where she graduated from high school.  Joanne attended Creighton St. Joseph School of Nursing in Omaha and Mt. Carmel Mercy School of Anesthesia in Detroit, MI, graduating in 1952.  She was employed at Mercy Hospital in Mason City for the next 36 years, retiring in 1988.
 
 After meeting on a blind date, she was united in marriage to Joseph Jay “JJ” Sberal on September 4, 1954, at St Joseph Catholic Church.  To this union, 5 children were born.
 
 Joanne and JJ loved to travel, visiting all 50 states before his death in 1993.  She also enjoyed traveling internationally to 26 countries.  Counted cross stitch, embroidery, needle point, reading and gardening were favorite past times, and when her eyesight failed, she listened to books on tape.  Joanne’s additional free time was always filled with taking her dogs for walks, of which she had MANY in her lifetime.
 
 Joanne is survived by sons, Dan (Luanne) Head, Steven and Jim Sberal; daughters, Jane Riewaldt and Mary (Jim) Sheldon; 16 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren, and of course her constant companion, dog Chloe.  Preceding her in death were her 2 brothers, 1 sister, husband, JJ; and son Michael “Buzz” Sberal.
 
 The Sberal family would like to thank the entire staff at the Sheffield Care Center for the excellent care they provided our mom the 13 months she lived there.  

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family of Joanne Sberal, 402 20^th Place SW, Mason City, IA. 50401.  Per Joanne's wishes, all memorials will go to Epiphany Parish.
